Star Trek gets the 'Lucas' treatment

I'm not sure how I feel about this: The original Star Trek episodes have been digitally remastered, with updated CGI effects not available 40 years ago. (I'm one who still loves the original of Star Wars, warts and all.) I'm not sure if Gene Roddenberry will be rolling over in his grave or not. The good side of this is that the series is being released in syndication again. (via)

Yeah, I have mixed feelings about this. If it is done in the same spirit as the DVD release of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE ... in which the upgraded effects were woven in so seamlessly, you did not even notice the difference ... then it could work.

But if it is that self-conscious butchering that Lucas does (and keeps doing) to the original (real) Star Wars films, then count me out. (At that point, it wouldn't be long before they started switching out the original actors with a bunch of modern day wannabes. Argh.)

I've always thought there was something endearingly cheesy about the original series -- you couldn't love the series for the effects, it had to be for the characters and the stories. Sometimes all that gets lost in the flashy special effects.
